For a lot of local searches - "real estate lawyer near me," "criminal lawyer [city]" - the Google Business Profile map pack shows up before any website does. A firm with an incomplete or unclaimed profile is invisible in that spot regardless of how good their website is, which makes this one of the highest-leverage, lowest-cost things a firm can fix.
Claim and verify it first
If you haven't explicitly claimed your listing through Google Business Profile Manager, someone else - a former employee, an old directory scrape, or nobody - may effectively control what shows up. Verification (usually by postcard, phone, or video) confirms you as the legitimate owner and unlocks the ability to actually edit anything.
Get the category and service area right
Choosing "Lawyer" as a broad primary category when a more specific one exists - "Personal Injury Attorney," "Immigration Attorney," "Family Law Attorney" - helps Google match your listing to more specific searches. If you serve clients across a wider region than just your office's city, the service area setting (not just the pin location) is what tells Google which nearby cities you actually want to show up for.
Photos, hours, and the details people check first
Real photos of your actual office outperform stock imagery, and profiles with more photos tend to get more engagement. Hours need to be accurate and updated for holidays - a profile showing "open" when you're actually closed is a fast way to lose a call to a competitor who answers. Filling in every optional field Google offers (services, attributes, a business description) gives the algorithm more signal to match you against relevant searches.
Reviews factor into local ranking directly
Review count and average rating are a documented part of how Google ranks local results, alongside relevance and distance. A firm with 40 reviews at 4.8 stars will generally out-rank one with 3 reviews at 5.0 stars for the same search, even though the rating is technically lower - volume and recency both matter. We cover how to build review volume without crossing ethical lines in why reviews matter and how to get more.
Mistakes that quietly hurt a profile
Duplicate listings (often from an old address or a rebrand) split your reviews and confuse Google about which one is authoritative - worth searching your firm name periodically to check. A mismatched address between your profile and your website hurts the same local trust signals reviews help build. And a profile marked permanently closed by mistake (sometimes reported incorrectly by a third party) can sit that way for weeks if you're not checking it.
