There are dozens of sites that will list a law firm, and a lot of them exist mainly to be sold to, not to actually send clients. Before paying for a featured placement anywhere, it's worth knowing what separates a directory that sends real inquiries from one that's just a page with your name on it.
What a useful directory actually does
A directory earns its place in your marketing mix by doing at least one of three things well: ranking for searches you're not ranking for yet on your own site, giving prospective clients a way to compare a few real options in one place, or reinforcing your name, address, and phone number consistently enough that it helps your local SEO elsewhere. A directory that does none of these - low traffic, no real search visibility, inconsistent or outdated listings - isn't worth paying to be featured on, however professional the sales pitch sounds.
National vs. provincial and regional directories
Large national directories tend to have more overall traffic but more competition for attention on each page. Regional and provincial directories - ones built specifically around Ontario, Quebec, or BC, for example - often convert better for a local firm because the searcher's intent is already narrowed by geography, and there's less noise to compete with. A firm serving one city is usually better served prioritizing a regional or city-specific directory over a generic national one with thousands of unrelated listings.
What to check before paying for a featured listing
Before upgrading to any paid or "featured" tier, ask for (or look for) actual traffic numbers, not just claimed reach. Check whether the directory's own pages rank in Google for relevant searches - if you can't find the directory itself when you search for a lawyer in your city, a listing on it isn't doing much. And check how the free tier compares to the paid one; a directory where the free listing is intentionally buried to push you toward paying is a different value proposition than one where featured placement adds real visibility on top of an already-decent free listing.
Keep your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP - name, address, phone number - consistency across every directory, your Google Business Profile, and your own website is a small but real local SEO factor. A firm listed as "Smith Law" in one place and "Smith Law Office LLP" in another, or with an old phone number still live on one directory, is sending Google mixed signals about which listing is authoritative. It's worth a quarterly check across whatever directories you're on.
Where LawDB fits
LawDB is a Canadian directory covering Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia today, organized by practice area and city so a searcher looking for "immigration lawyer Vancouver" or "family lawyer Ottawa" lands on a filtered, relevant list rather than a generic national page.
