BC's Family Law Act contains a provision that surprises people constantly: unmarried partners who have lived together in a marriage-like relationship for two years are treated much like married spouses for property division and spousal support. If you have been living with a partner for more than two years in BC, you likely have far more legal exposure, and far more entitlement, than you assume. This is close to the opposite of the position in Quebec, so advice picked up from elsewhere in Canada often does not apply here.

BC also uses different vocabulary than other provinces: parenting time and parental responsibilities rather than custody and access. Family matters can proceed through Provincial Court, which does not charge filing fees and handles parenting and support but not property, or Supreme Court, which handles everything including divorce and property.
